If God Is All-Powerful and Loving, Why Is There Evil in the World?

I know this question hurts. When you see pain, injustice, or cruelty, it’s normal to feel confused, angry, or even distant from God. You’re not wrong to ask—this is one of the most honest, heartfelt questions anyone can have. And the good news? The Bible doesn’t shy away from it. It gives us real, hopeful answers we can trust.

First: God Didn’t Create Evil—He Created Choice

God is 100% good, all-powerful, and full of love (1 John 1:5: “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all”). When He made the world, He said it was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). No pain, no fear, no evil—just perfect peace with Him.

But here’s the key: God didn’t make us like robots that have to love Him. He gave us free will—the power to choose love, or to turn away. Why? Because real love can’t be forced. It has to be chosen.

Evil started when people (and angels, like Satan) chose to walk away from God. The Bible says sin entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience (Romans 5:12: “Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned”). Evil is the absence of God’s good, not something He made.

Second: Evil Is Temporary—God Has a Plan to End It

Right now, we live in a broken world because of those choices. But God is not surprised by evil, and He’s not powerless against it. The Bible tells us three truths that give us hope:

  1. God limits evil: Satan can only do what God allows (1 Peter 5:8-9: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith”).
  2. God uses even evil for good: What people mean for harm, God can turn into something good (Genesis 50:20: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good”).
  3. God will destroy evil forever: One day, Jesus will return, and there will be no more pain, tears, or evil (Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away”).

Third: What You Can Do Today—Simple, Practical Steps

Knowing why evil exists helps, but you need real ways to live with hope right now. Here are 3 easy, daily things you can do:

  1. Talk to God honestly: You don’t have to use fancy words. Say, “God, this hurts. I’m confused. Help me trust You.” He hears every word (Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”).
  2. Choose good, even when it’s hard: When you see evil, don’t fight it with more evil. Fight it with kindness, forgiveness, and love (Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”).
  3. Hold onto hope: Remind yourself that this world is not our home. Evil is temporary, but God’s love is forever (2 Timothy 4:18: “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom”).

A Gentle Prayer for You

God, I come to You with an open heart. I see the evil in this world, and it scares me. Sometimes I doubt, and that’s okay. Thank You for being loving enough to hear my questions and powerful enough to handle my pain. Help me trust You even when I don’t understand. Teach me to choose good, to love others, and to hold onto the hope that one day, all evil will be gone. I give You my doubts, my fear, and my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
