If God is good, why is there suffering and evil?

I know your heart hurts right now. When you see pain, cruelty, and loss all around, it’s normal to feel confused, angry, or even abandoned. Your questions are not foolish—they are honest. And God sees every tear you cry. He is not distant from your pain.

Let’s start simple: God is good, and He did not make evil.

The Bible says God created a perfect world at first. Everything was good—no pain, no fear, no sin (Genesis 1:31).

Evil and suffering began when humans chose to disobey God. God gave us free will—the power to choose love or hate, good or bad. He didn’t want robots; He wanted people who love Him freely. But we chose wrong, and sin broke the world (Genesis 3:17-19).

The Bible says:

  • “The whole world is under the control of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19)
  • “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Suffering comes from three things:

  1. Human choices (greed, anger, cruelty)
  2. A broken world (disease, disaster, decay)
  3. Evil spiritual forces (Satan’s lies and attacks)

God is not the cause of evil—but He is in control. He can take even the worst pain and turn it into good (Romans 8:28).

Jesus gets it—He suffered too.

Jesus was perfect, yet He endured pain, betrayal, and death on a cross. He knows what it feels like to be hurt, lonely, and misunderstood. The Bible says:

  • “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” (Hebrews 4:15)

Jesus didn’t stay dead. He rose again, defeating sin, death, and evil forever. One day, He will wipe every tear and end all suffering (Revelation 21:4).

What can you do today? (Practical, simple steps)

You don’t need big theology—just small, honest acts of faith.

  1. Tell God how you really feel. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. Say, “God, this hurts. I’m angry. I don’t understand.” He can handle your honesty.
  2. Read one short Bible verse daily.Start with these:
    • “I will be with you; you will not be overwhelmed.” (Isaiah 43:2)
    • “Overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)
  3. Choose one kind act when you’re hurt. When someone is cruel, respond with a gentle word. When you’re in pain, help someone else. Good always beats evil in the end.
  4. Pray for strength, not answers. You may never know “why” in this life—but you can know God is with you. Ask Him to carry your pain.

A soft, simple prayer for you

Dear God,

My heart is heavy, and I don’t have all the answers. I’m hurting, and I need You. Thank You that You are good, even when life is not. Thank You that Jesus suffered with me and for me. Help me trust You when I can’t see the way. Give me strength to keep going, to choose good, and to love others. I believe You will make all things right one day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
